Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, Lord Callanan, will join the NP11 and a delegation of northern energy experts at a visit to Hull on September 15th.
Taking place two weeks after the appointment of Claire Coutinho MP as the UK’s Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, the Minister for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, Lord Callanan will undertake a tour of Saltend Power Station, operated by Triton Power.
The tour will be followed by a roundtable discussion, hosted by the NP11 and Reckitt, focussing on the Net Zero opportunity in the North.
Representatives from HEY LEP, Equinor, Drax, Orsted, Nature North will participate in the roundtable discussion and offer their own experiences to the minister.
Clare Hayward MBE, DL Interim Chair of the NP11, said: “We are delighted to host Lord Callanan to offer an unrivalled industry insight into the innovative work that this region is undertaking. The North has a very strong energy story to tell, with an incredible opportunity to join up work going on from coast to coast, from Net Zero North West through to the assets here in the East that we are visiting with the Minister.
“We are looking forward to working together to strengthen the partnership between the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero, Northern leadership, and industry to deliver on the significant opportunity here in the North that will impact the wider UK economy.”
Independent research commissioned by the NP11 highlighted the opportunity for the North to unlock an additional £6 billion in economic benefits for UK plc through targeted investment, collaboration and pan-northern leadership.
The NP11 Net Zero North Prospectus (2022) showed that scaling up existing clean growth activity could create 100,000 new green jobs and generate £2.3bn of GVA by 2050 whilst reducing carbon emissions by 50%.
This would be driven by significantly increased inward investment in technologies such as advanced offshore wind, new nuclear, low carbon hydrogen and carbon capture, utilisation and storage, alongside necessary investment to decarbonise transport, buildings and industry and protecting our natural environments. The NP11 are currently working with the Department of Business and Trade to step up marketing activity, but there is an opportunity to go further and faster.
James Newman OBE, Chair of Hull and East Yorkshire LEP, said: “Thanks to a strong industrial legacy and significant private investment, the North offers the country an unique opportunity to ensure the UK delivers on its climate obligations, whilst at the same time unlocking significant growth.
“The upcoming ministerial visit reflects our ambition to continue to build a robust energy economy of the future. We would like to see more investment coming to the North from businesses, whose ambitions match our own and which can help transition us into a Net Zero future.”
Dan Sadler, Equinor’s vice president for UK Low Carbon Solutions, said: “Equinor welcomes the minister’s visit to the Humber, the UK’s industrial heartland, where the ambitious plans to decarbonise the region through the East Coast Cluster will be a major contributor to the government’s Net Zero targets.
“Saltend is a key location to unlocking the region’s potential to bring jobs and clean growth while also developing skills, knowledge and technology that can be exported around the world – putting the Humber estuary and wider region at the centre of a global, decarbonised economy.”
Helen Boyle, Head of Regional Development for the North West at Cadent, said: “The North has consistently proven itself to be at the forefront of industrial progress taking on and spearheading innovation that benefits the country.
“It is a vital region for the future energy security of the UK, and as we collectively work towards net zero, we will need to be fully collaborative and form a coalition of intent, that ensures we’re grasping the seismic economic opportunities that green energy offers.”
