Convention of The North with NP11 event:
Bringing the North Together
On 13 September 2019, the Convention of the North and The NP11, with support from Government, gathered over 600 of the North’s political, business community and academic leaders, along with young people’s groups, to set out the vision for the North’s future.
The event, held at Magna Science Adventure Centre in Rotherham, was the largest ever of its kind and brought together influential bodies such as the N8 research partnership, People’s Powerhouse, Northern Power Women, alongside local, regional and national government partners.
The event acted as a working convention and a platform for key figures to debate policy across a series of workshops which addressed skills and education, housing, transport, innovation, trade and investment and clean growth.
Roger Marsh OBE, Chair of Leeds City Region LEP and The NP11 outlined why the North must be placed front and centre of Government plans for UK competitiveness and prosperity beyond Brexit.
Cllr Nick Forbes, Leader of Newcastle City Council and Chair of Convention of the North set out how Northern leaders can build on recent successful campaigns – including the Northern media’s ‘Power Up the North’ and ‘One North’ campaigns – to make lasting changes and, if given the right tools, enable important decisions to be taken that will vastly improve people’s lives.
Sessions throughout the day were then brought together into a powerful, unified case to the new Prime Minister, who made a key note speech at the event, and Government for tangible investment in the Northern Powerhouse, putting it at the top of the economic agenda so that it can fulfil its potentially transformational role in the future of the UK.
